A Long Journey: The Hidden Jews of the Southwest

February 11, 2024

DVD presentation produced by Isaac Artenstein

Come watch the move and discuss the history and traditions of Sephardic Jews in the Southwest.

A one-hour film bringing to life the stories of modern-day New Mexican Catholics whose secret was their hidden Jewish roots. It tells stories of individuals hiding their Jewish roots and living outwardly Catholic lives. Many trace their ancestors back to the time of the Spanish Inquisition when Jews often feigned conversion to Catholicism.

The producer Artenstein and his crew traveled throughout New Mexico and southwest Texas to explore the world of the descendants of the “crypto Jews” and how many of them are exploring their family trees and coming back to Judaism, not always an easy feat.
