The village of Guadalupe, Bernalillo, New Mexico is one of several villages that served as alternative grazing venues for sheep ranchers in the Alameda/Corrales/Bernalillo Districts.

During the 18th century Spanish Colonial Governors, particularly Provincial Governor Tomas Velez Capuchin, fostered the expansive provision of land grants in the Rio Puerco River valley for the settlement of towns and villages. The intent was these settlements would provide defensive perimeters against raids by marauding tribes of Apache and Navajo.


Due to periodic uprisings by Native American tribes, the Rio Puerco River valley farmers and ranchers abandoned their towns and sought refuge in fortified towns closer to the Albuquerque- Bernalillo Districts.
Relative peace in the Rio Puerco River Valley did not occur until 1868 with a signing of a treaty with the Navajo, and a subsequent treaty with the Apache in 1872…
